Becoming a catechist is exciting and, let’s face it, somewhat intimidating! New catechists are eager to learn some basic teaching skills to help them gain confidence as they begin their service in this vocation. These Webinars will provide catechists, both those who are new and those who’d like to refresh their skills, with an introduction to the basic tools needed to effectively engage young people in faith formation.

Some of the topics covered in these Webinars include:

·         10 things you can do NOW to become instantly effective as a catechist

·         Lesson planning and preparation

·         The role of discipline

·         Polishing your technique

·         Plugging into the power of prayer

Both Webinars are led by Joe Paprocki, an 8th-grade catechist in the Archdiocese of Chicago with over 30 years of experience in pastoral ministry. Joe, National Consultant for Faith Formation at Loyola Press, is the author of numerous books including the best-selling The Catechist’s Toolbox and A Well-Built Faith, as well as the host of the blog Catechist’s Journey.

  1. I’ll be sharing this with my new catechists this year…and those returning. We read through the Toolbox last year as a group and found it so helpful! Looking forward to the webinar – thanks so much for doing this!

  2. Joe,

Hi.I’m new to this and I’m not sure how this works on the computer,

or what to expect. Can you Pls.Send me some info on this?

    Thank you

    Lynn

    • Hi Lynn, basically, when you register, you’ll receive the information you need (and it’s free!). In short, you’ll log on to your computer on Aug. 19 and 26 and follow the presentation that I’ll be giving. You’ll be listening to the sound of my voice while you watch a Powerpoint presentation (that I’ll be controlling) on your computer screen. From time to time, I’ll invite you to respond to an interactive poll question and at any time during the presentation, you’ll be able to type in a question if you wish and I’ll answer questions throughout the presentation. It’ll be very simple! Give it a try…you’ll enjoy it!

      • Dear Joe

Thank-you so much for the info that you gave

me.I look forward to taking this course.

I was wondering if there is a certificate that you

give for completeing this course so that I

may give it to my DRE.

        Thank-you Lynn

        • Lynn, I’m not sure about an actual certificate…I’ll look into it. I know that you’ll be able to print out email confirmation of the webinar to show to your DRE. -joe

  3. Joe,
We start our religious education classes August 19. We will be meeting on the 19 and the 26th. Would you be presenting this information at any other time?

  4. Joe –
Heard you on Morning Air this morning on the way to work and immediately went to your blog when I got to my office. What a great resource for all catechists. I’m and Assistant Principal at my school and will be teaching 8th grade Religion for the first time this year. I’m also helping with Confirmation prep in the parish.

I am in the process of becoming “catechist certified” and this blog and upcoming webinar are such wonderful resources for my journey.

    Thank you!

    • Darren, I’m glad that you had a chance to listen to Morning Air this morning and that you’ll be participating in the Webinars. I hope that I can contribute something to your efforts to become an effective 8th grade religion teacher. Thanks for writing!

  5. Joe,
Two of us from our parish came to your classes at St. John Vianney and I am reading the toolbox right now. I am so excited because I

    • Shelly, congratulations! What a wonderful privilege to teach First Communion class. Hurry and register if you want the Aug. 19 and 26 dates….they’re filling up fast! I think you’re in for a marvelous journey as a catechist and I’m happy that you’re sharing that experience with me and all of our fellow catechists who “gather” here in cyberspace!

  6. This is a cool thing to offer 🙂

Unfortunately, for me that is prime family time. Reading & bedtime routines, so I’ll leave a spot open for someone else. Prayers for a positive outcome for this!!

    • Ali, don’t forget that we’ll be making a recording of the webinars available for folks to peruse at their convenience after the live presentations.

  7. I enjoyed your first webinar and was thrilled to hear that your sessions will be available on line for those who cannot “attend” live. Will this info be available soon? I have a catechist meeting on Aug. 27 and want to share your wonderful ministry with them. Our former DRE gave each catechist your “Toolbox” book as a going away gift. So they are set to go.
