More on the “Coach Approach”

January 5, 2012 Joe Paprocki 2

The other day, I posted on the parallels between coaching and serving as a catechist. That stirred up the following conversation between a DRE and one of her catechists who is indeed also a coach. Enjoy!   Hi Joe!  In response to your latest Catechist’s Journey email, I asked one of my catechists if he saw a connection between coaching and being a catechist.  Scott coaches basketball and then “cleans up” and comes to teach […]

Now THAT’S a Toolbox!

September 30, 2011 Joe Paprocki 2

I had the pleasure of doing a Catechist’s Toolbox presentation for about 50 catechists in the Northern Deanery of Indianapolis on Thursday evening and the folks there really outdid themselves…take a look at this welcome table!           Speaking of the Catechist’s Toolbox, DRE Jackie Noll (St. Matthew, Indianapolis) gave me a grand tour of her facilities including her storage space. Now THAT’S a toolbox! Look at this vast array of resources […]

Great Stories About Catechetical Mentors – Check it Out!

July 7, 2011 Joe Paprocki 1

Here’s just one of the many great stories that folks are sharing about their catechetical mentors. This one is from Rosie: Back when dirt was young, I attended undergraduate college at Gonzaga University. I have to attribute my love for theology and the passing on of faith to our children (am a DRE for over 20 years now) to two of my professors–Fr. Armand Nigro and Fr. Vincent Beuzer. They provided a dynamic model of […]

More More Great Stories on the Journey – How Did I Get Into This?

June 2, 2011 Joe Paprocki 0

Look at what the following catechists are saying about their calling: Tim:  “It seems to be in my blood to teach of our faith, and I have enjoyed every step of the way. With each class it seems to reaffirm my love for teaching!” Edith:  “I am glad the Lord has called me to this ministry in serving Him in his children. May His name be praised.” Carol: “What better way to embrace the faith […]

How Did I Get Into This? Stories on the Journey

June 1, 2011 Joe Paprocki 0

How did you become a catechist? Toni writes the following: Let’s just say that our Lord planted the seed in my heart well before I finally made the leap. I had thought about volunteering in previous years but never did. It was late August the year my daughter was to enter 5th grade. At Mass one Sunday, our DRE was at the pulpit requesting volunteers for Catechesis. I again felt that tug — “should I?”, […]

Telling Stories on the Journey

May 3, 2011 Joe Paprocki 12

Last evening, at our end-of-the-year catechist meeting, my favorite part was when our DRE, Arlene, invited catechists to share stories of highlights or “Aha!” moments from this past year. It was very heart-warming to hear people sharing stories of how they connected with the kids they taught in the past year. One catechist, in particular, talked about how he made a prayer box for his 7th graders and invited the kids to write prayer intentions […]

It’t Time for the Living Stations Again!

March 25, 2011 Joe Paprocki 0

Each year, during Lent, the parish school of religion puts on 2 Living Stations of the Cross – one by the 4th graders and one by the 8th graders. Since I’m teaching 4th grade this year, it once again means that many of my students will be involved (in fact, my aide’s son will play the role of Jesus!). Our DRE, Arlene, handles all of the preparations and rehearsals and the rehearsals begin this Monday. What […]
