Catechists in Action – Katie Elwood Teaches 2nd Graders About Their Parish Community

In this segment of Catechists in Action, 2nd grade catechist Katie Elwood explains to her class what it means to be a member of a parish community. Watch as she…

  • directs the children to fill out a page in their book about where they were baptized.
  • talks about what a parish community is
  • calls the kids back to attention when their attention wavers (she does so firmly but without losing her enthusiastic  and friendly voice)
  • prepares the children to go over to church for a tour led by the pastor
  • reminds the children to be reverent, to bless themselves with holy water (“do not put your whole hand in!”), and to genuflect to the Blessed Sacrament in the tabernacle.

  1. Great video of your class!
I have to laugh, not really, because a lot of children, including my 2nd grade class ( 19 ) , don’t have a clue about where they were baptized or who their God parents are etc… Parent’s obviously do not talk about things like this in their home’s. It’s soo important that we introduce this kind of conversation with our classes. Our 2nd graders both parish and CCD made their First Reconciliation these past 2 weeks. It was about 120 total children !
God Bless you and your program
