Pop-Up Catechesis: Speaking God’s Language Through Silence

When I was in high school, I remember being told by a Jesuit priest (one of my teachers) to listen for God in the silence. This was no easy task. First of all, it was not easy for me to find a quiet place in a home that I shared with my eight siblings! Second, when I did find some silence, I never heard God speaking to me. When I related this to the priest, he told me that I needed to learn to listen, not with my ears, but with my heart. I was waiting to hear a voice in the silence. He was telling me that the silence itself was God speaking to me!

Indeed, in our Catholic spiritual tradition, silence is considered God’s primary language. Living in a world that is very noisy, we are too often missing out on God’s primary way of communicating with us. In this episode of Pop-Up Catechesis, we explore the importance of silence.
