Remember when the iPhone started appearing all over TV with its catch phrase, “There’s an app for that?” No matter the question, the iPhone had an app to answer it. In a similar vein, we Catholics are lucky because, no matter what our need or failure, worry or struggle, there’s a saint for that. And we don’t need an expensive device to get in touch with a heavenly mentor and friend; we can visit a church, read a book or website, or just sit a few moments in silent prayer.
Desperate for patience? Go to St. Monica or St. Francis de Sales.
Leading a group for divorced and separated parishioners? Call on St. Eugene de Mazenod.
Hosting a retreat? That’s St. Ignatius Loyola.
What about prepping for the weekly Bible study? Get to know St. Jerome.
Maybe you’re struggling with day-to-day of parish ministry. Go to St. Charles Borromeo and St. Robert Bellarmine, patrons of catechists.
Take a look at the saints entrusted with the care of your diocese or parish. In my diocese, Our Lady of Mercy and St. Mark are the patrons. My parish, Our Lady Queen of Martyrs, is also entrusted to the Blessed Mother. What about your diocese and parish? Who watches over them?
Saints aren’t just for church names, feast days, and Confirmation. They are, just like our earthbound friends and supporters, there for all of us when things are rough, we want advice, or we just need someone to listen.
Whatever the need, there’s a saint for that.
