One of the most loved and famous Christmas hymns is O Come All Ye Faithful (Adeste Fideles) and it’s great refrain: “O Come let us adore him!”
To adore someone is to desire to devote all of your attention to him or her. It means to think of that person as being above all others and to admire his or her beauty.
Catholics have a great tradition called adoration. For a good description of the practice of adoration, check out Busted Halo. Adoration is an opportunity for us to devote all of our attention to the Lord and to place him above all else in our lives. It is also an opportunity to adore God’s “beauty” which is revealed in his mercy, compassion, and justice.
With that as a introduction, it was announced today that Pope Francis is inviting Catholics worldwide to join with him in simultaneous Eucharistic Adoration on the Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi) at 5 pm (Rome time) on Sunday, June 2, 2013. In essence, the goal is for all Catholics around the world to be united in devoting all of our attention to the Lord, who is present in our midst, and placing him above all else.
[Chicago – central time zone – has a 7 hour time difference with Rome meaning that the hour of adoration will take place at 10 am Chicago time. The east coast will be at 11 am, mountain time will be 9 am and the west coast at 8 am. Some U.S. parishes will adjust their mass schedules to coincide with the hour of adoration while others will observe the hour later in the day so as not to disrupt Mass schedules. Here is a chart of dioceses and the times designated. I’m sure this will be updated as dioceses check in with their local information]
