New Edition of Catholic Youth Bible

From time to time, people ask me about Bibles to use with young people. Here’s a review of the new edition of the Catholic Youth Bible from Brigid Wolff, the Coordinator of the Chicago Catholic Scripture School.

Brigid Wolff
A new edition of The Catholic Youth Bible has been released and is now available for purchase for $26.95 in paperback. This edition uses the New American Bible (NAB) rather than the New Revised Standard Version (NRSV) of the Bible, which is an improvement since the NAB is the translation used in the liturgy.
The new edition retains the “Pray it! Study it! Live it!” emphasis with additional information in each book that points the reader towards important points of connection with the text. This edition includes headings on Catholic Connections, Cultural Connections, and Catholic Social Teaching.

Of particular note in this new edition are the insertions, on heavy card stock, into the pages, which draw the hand and eye towards important information on six topics. The first deals with the Catholic approach to studying the Bible, the second informs the reader of various ways to pray with the Bible drawing upon memorization, Lectio Divina, and praying with the Psalms by theme. The third insertion addresses how to live Biblical principles such as trust, courage, service, and caring for the poor and vulnerable.

The third section presents images of the bible. This section includes but goes beyond pictures. For example, it also presents several excellent charts on the Name of God in the Old Testament and Titles of Jesus in the New Testament. The sixth and final section is titled “Catholic Practices and Prayers.” This section includes important prayers but goes beyond merely printing prayers to explaining the biblical basis for the “Core Catholic Attitudes and Practices” that sustain all prayer.

I highly recommend this new edition of The Catholic Youth Bible for use in classrooms or as a gift for Confirmation or Graduation.
