Catechists in Action – Meet Nick!

This year, I’m excited to bring a new feature to Catechist’s JourneyCatechists in Action – in which I will be visiting, observing, and videotaping catechists teaching their classes and blogging about the experience. This will give you an opportunity to see fellow catechists “doing their thing” so that you can compare styles, learn some new strategies, and become a more effective catechist yourself.

I already have 5 catechist visits lined up for this year. Oddly enough, all of my volunteers so far are male catechists (I was thinking of calling the feature “Men at Work”) which actually turns out to be a real blessing since we are trying to encourage more men to enter into the catechetical ministry.

The first catechist we’ll visit is Nick, a 5th grade catechist in Cary, Illinois, in the Rockford Diocese. If you’ve participated in any of my webinars, you already know Nick since he serves as the host of each and every one of them! I’ll visit him on Wednesday, October 12, as he teaches his class at  Sts. Peter and Paul parish. Between now and then, I’ll share a little more information about what Nick hopes to be doing in his class on October 12 and what we might look for. Thanks, Nick, for being the first to volunteer for this new feature…I’m really looking forward to watching you in action!

    • I’m very excited about doing this…I think it will be great for catechists to be able to see their peers in action and to learn from one another.

  1. Hi Joe
This is a great idea to visit Catechists. I would love to have you come and visit our Faith Formation Catechists here in Churchville, NY. I will be sure to ask my Catechists to subscribe to Catechist Journey so that they will have an opportunity to enjoy seeing fellow Catechists recognized. We need to do all we can to encourage and empower them.

    • Thanks, Kathy. I appreciate the invitation. Right now I’m keeping it local but you never know what the future holds. Till then, thanks for telling your catechists to “tune in.”
