Practice Makes Catholic Webinar Recording Now Available!

As promised, the recording of the Practice Makes Catholic Webinar is now available for those of you (including me!) who missed it live. Remember, the voice you hear throughout the webinar is that of my colleague Jim Moran who bravely filled in for me as I was away at my Mother-in-law’s funeral. Thanks again Jim. Also, it’s been pointed out to me that the link to the Classroom Covenant in my PDF of Resources is […]

What Age to Confirm?

I was quoted in an article in the current issue of the National Catholic Reporter, talking about the issue of what age to confirm. What are your thoughts about this issue? Q & A from Practice Makes Catholic Webinar

I was delighted to receive the print out of comments and questions that participants sent in during last week’s Practice Makes Catholic Webinar. It was especially nice to see how much you enjoyed simply sharing ideas with one another. So, as you peruse the following, know that there are more comments than there are questions for me to answer.  Practice Makes Catholic Q & A Remember that a recording of the Webinar will be available within […]

Joe's Comings and Goings

Thanks and So Many Other Things…

First, I want to extend a great big THANK YOU to all of the people who expressed their thoughts and prayers over these last few days as we mourned the death and celebrated the life of my mother-in-law, Sophie, who passed away on Tuesday at the tender young age of 95. The funeral was a beautiful experience and it was good to be surrounded by so much love. While I was away, I hear a […]

What’s Up with Catechetical Sunday?

Alison writes: Hi Joe , could you please give me an explanation on why and when Catechetical Sunday was started and the role of catechists and the community as with regard to catechetical sunday? Here’s some good background on what Catechetical Sunday is all about and how it came about (I found this on the Web site for the Diocese of Fargo) – The third Sunday of September in the United States is celebrated as […]

Mother’s Day – Trusting that God Knows Best

In honor of Mother’s Day, I share with you the following brief reflection from Amy Welborn’s A Catholic Woman’s Book of Days: There is no way I could have imagined, at the beginning of any of my pregnancies, who the child within me would turn out to be. Oh, I had my hopes and dreams, but in more than twenty years of watching the fruit of my womb grow, I have found, without exception, that […]

Sharing Stories

Telling Stories on the Journey

Last evening, at our end-of-the-year catechist meeting, my favorite part was when our DRE, Arlene, invited catechists to share stories of highlights or “Aha!” moments from this past year. It was very heart-warming to hear people sharing stories of how they connected with the kids they taught in the past year. One catechist, in particular, talked about how he made a prayer box for his 7th graders and invited the kids to write prayer intentions […]

Intermediate Grades

Sowing the Seeds for Future Catechists

One thing I did this year on the last day of class (something I had never done before) was to invite my 4th graders to consider becoming a catechist some day! I told them that I thoroughly enjoyed my time working with them and that I’m pretty sure it showed. I said that being a catechist is a wonderful way to practice your faith and to bring others closer to God and that I encourage […]

Roman Missal Changes

A Catechist’s Guide to the New Translation – from the Diocese of Lansing

Thanks to my colleague Denise, here’s a resource for catechists to use to implement the new translation of the Roman Missal. It’s from the Diocese of Lansing, MI, and it is quite thorough. http://www.dioceseoflansing.org/catechesis_k12/Roman_Missal_Children_Adolescents.pdf It basically constitutes a mini-curriculum on the Mass that would require 8 sessions. What I’m hearing from a lot of catechetical leaders, however, is that they are not planning on setting aside such large chunks of time from their regular curriculum (for […]
