Autumn is one of my favorite times! It is a season that just begs for outdoor activity—to get out into the crisp autumn air and to see the leaves changing spectacular colors. It is a season that reminds us of the beauty of God’s creation, as well as our responsibility to care for that creation. The new Directory for Catechesis reminds us that “Catechesis is to take care in the first place to help believers become aware that the commitment to the environmental question is an integral part of the Christian life.” (384) No one exemplified this better than St. Francis of Assisi—whose feast we celebrate October 4—a saint who had such a unique love for God’s creation that he is the patron saint of animals and the environment. St. Francis is the focus of this episode of Pop-Up Catechesis.
