Here is my plan for this evening’s session.
BIG IDEA: God Leads His People from Slavery in Egypt to Freedom
PRELIMINARY (10 mins)
- Begin with opening procession to O Come, O Come, Emmanuel (Aaron Shust). Bell ringer = Maddie
- Opening prayer ritual (final collection for Catholic Relief Services – Philippines)
- Instead of sharing petitions, sit quietly and listen again to O Come, O Come, Emmanuel, reflecting on how/where we need God to come into our lives. (This will take the place of a guided reflection for this session)
ENGAGE (10 mins)
- Briefly review the stories of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, focusing primarily on the chronology.
- Tell the students that you went shopping on Black Friday to buy a gift for your favorite student. Select one student as your “favorite” and invite him or her to come forward and place on him/her a coat/jacket (in my case, my leather bomber jacket!). Tell that student that he or she can sit off on the side and have some snacks while the rest of the class works.
- Ask the class how this makes them feel! Before long, resentment would grow. Explain that for our first part of class, we are going to see how this is what happened with Jacob’s son Joseph and his brothers. Draw attention to Art Print of Joseph and the Coat of Many Colors from the Exploring Faith Through Art easel from the Finding God program.
EXPLORE (60 mins)
- Scripture reading: Gn 37:1-4 (This is the story of Jacob’s family) – Reader = Mike
- Show PPT pictures of the story of Joseph and tell the story in “fast motion”
- Joseph’s coat of many colors (brothers resent) – (Gn 37:3-5)
- Joseph’s dreams (brothers further resent) – (Gn 37:7-8)
- Joseph’s brothers plot to kill him . (Gn 37:18-24)
- Joseph sold into slavery. (Gn 37:25-28)
- Jacob’s brothers tell Jacob that Joseph was murdered. (Gn 37:31-34)
- Joseph interprest dreams in prison. (Gn 40:1-8)
- Pharaoh summons Joseph to interpret his dream. (Gn 41:14-21)
- Joseph is made governor of Egypt. His brothers come to buy food. (42:5-8)
- Joseph finally reveals his identity and forgives his brothers. (Gn 45:1-5)
- Jacob and his sons move to Egypt. (Gn 46:1-7)
- The Egyptians are threatened by the growing Hebrew population and enslave them. (Ex 1:6-11)
- Moses in the reeds. (Ex 2:1-4)
- Moses kills an Egyptian and flees. (Ex 2:11-12)
- God hears the cries of his people being held as slaves in Egypt. (Ex 2:23-25)
- Next, direct the students to locate the Bible passages of each of the above story points and have volunteers read aloud to get the story in “slow motion.”
- After each story, invite a volunteer to come forward and to “drag and drop” the corresponding PowerPoint image into the correct box so that the story unfolds chronologically. (see sample below – I copied and pasted images from Google Images that correspond with the scenes of the stories above. The images below are only placeholders – free clip art from Phillip Martin – to give you an idea of what I’m doing with the PowerPoint. I can’t share the images I actually chose since I don’t have copyright permission but this should give you an idea of what I’m doing)

- When the above activity is completed, distribute the Prince of Egypt Video Discussion Guide and begin showing the Prince of Egypt video beginning with the scene where Moses encounters the burning bush.
- Go over Discussion Guide
RESPOND
- Distribute and go over the Homework Notification Sheet asking parents to help their child to memorize (take to heart) the First 3 Commandments.
