Catechists in Action – Katie Elwood Takes Her Class to Church for a Tour

In these segments of Catechists in Action, we watch as 2nd grade catechist Katie Elwood takes her children (along with the other 2nd grade classes) to the church for a tour led by the pastor, Fr. Hyland. In the first segment…

  • Katie leads her 2nd graders into the church and has them bless themselves with holy water
  • Fr. Hyland welcomes the children into the sanctuary
  • Fr. Hyland explains the baptismal font to the children

In the 2nd segment, Fr. Hyland tells the children about…

  • the Paschal (Easter) candle
  • Holy Saturday and the Easter vigil
  • the symbol of light as dispelling the darkness of sin
  • baptism as the way we come into the light of Christ’s life and victory

I think the pastor does a nice job of talking to the children in a way they can understand without treating them like babies and he holds their attention well with his voice and enthusiasm…not easy to do with a bunch of 7 year-olds! Meanwhile, Katie and the other catechists (off-camera) are doing a nice job of keeping those 7 year-olds in order.
